Welcome to the Kiwanis Club of West Omaha
 
Founded in 1938 for Kiwanis Club of Greater Omaha and founded in 1961 for Kiwanis Club Westside which have merged together to form the Kiwanis Club of West Omaha. Each has a rich history of community service throughout the years. We are an eclectic mix of ages, genders, occupations, backgrounds and interests. We are all passionate about making our community and the world a better place for children so they can thrive. We are devoted to serving the children in our local community and also children all across the country and worldwide through unique and innovative service projects and fundraising initiatives. Members and invited guests meet each Monday at Noon for food, fellowship, and for the opportunity to hear from speakers about important matters in our region.

Kiwanis Club of West Omaha Meeting June 24, 2024

The meeting was opened with a prayer led by Kip.This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Attendance:  15

No winner for 50/50 Drawing. 

Ralph collected Happy Bucks.

Kip gave a report on the Board Meeting last week. $250.00 was donated to The Big Garden Project and $250.00 was donated to the Diaper Project. The Board voted to donate $1000.00 to Key Club Sponsorship.

The slate of officers has been set for next year. President is Kip, President Elect is Frank, Treasurer is Steve, Secretary is Glen, 1 year Board Members are Rod and Greg. 2 year Board Members are Rich and Tom.

Tentative dates were mentioned for the installation dinner. Jack will will check to see of either of the dates are available at the Country Club.

The playground project is still being considered. Jack is checking with the school principal to see how the project is progressing.

Millard North Key Club needs Kiwanis sponsors. They have a school sponsor. Rod and Glenn volunteered to pursue this opportunity.

Deb brought in 2 storage totes and a wooden shelf unit for Joann to take to Sienna Francis House. Barb brought in some food items.  Remember you can bring in food, clothing and household items to any meeting.  Joann and Deb will get the items delivered to one of the following: Sienna Francis House, Stephens Center or Open Door Mission.  

Rod mentioned All Play has completed the spring season. The fall season is August 10th to September 15. They will need volunteers. Go to Allplay.org to sign up to volunteer.

A big Thank You to Deb for cashing in aluminum cans that club members have collected . She turned in $11.00 to our club.  Remember to bring in your aluminum cans to any meeting.

Rod introduced our speaker Edward A. Morse, Father Flanagan League Society of Devotion Board Member Appointed by Archbishop George Lucas. 

He is a professor of law at Creighton University School of Law where he holds the McGrath North Mullin & Kratz Endowed Chair in Business Law. The Father Flanagan League Society of Devotions Mission : To educate and inform all people of the heroic virtand sanctity of Father Flanagan's life and his mission as mentor and protector of youth, and spread devotion of his example throughout the world. A documentary telling the story of Father Flanagan will be released to theatres October 8th. It is called A Servants Heart. It was a very informative presentation.  For more info you can go to www.fatherflanagan.org (league website. Greg won the 50/50 Drawing.

We had a special guest, Bill's wife Barbara.
 
Frank said Flag Day went very well. Dale said they received compliments from people about how nice our flag project is. Volunteers are needed for July 4th. Contact Dennis or Frank if you are available to volunteer.
 
Kip read Flag Facts to us. Interesting information.
 
Barb is planning to shop for back packs and supplies for Completely Kid's in July. They have asked to have them delivered by August 1st. 
 
Barb is planning to contact Ronald McDonald House to prepare a meal for them towards the last of July.
 
Deb reminded everyone they can bring food, clothing or household items to any meeting She and Joann will see they are delivered to Sienna Francis House, Open Door Mission or Stephens Center. Bill will see things are delivered to Moving Veterans Forward.
 
Dale will check with Completely Kid's to see if they need any volunteers during the summer months.
 
Rod introduced our speaker David Edmund Black. He is Senior Director of Public Affairs for Union Pacific Railroad.  Union Pacific employs 33,000 people across the country. They develop and deliver quality programs and services to attract, develop, motivate and retain a skilled, diverse workforce. They do this with an emphasis on the Company's most valuable asset, its employees.  Union Pacific operates North America's premier railroad franchise, covering 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States. It is the largest railroad in North America. We learned a lot about Union Pacific from Dave.
 
Board Meeting is Thursday, June 20th at 6:30 at Kip's office.
 
Speaker for June 24th is Edward A. Morse: Creighton Law Professor and Father Flanagan League Society of Devotion President - Speaking mostly about a movie to be released this Fall about Father Flanagan .

We received a message from Dennis that he has enough volunteers for placing and picking up flags on July 4th.
 
Steve thanked everyone that participated in our Golf Outing. It came out very well. Our club made about $3,300.00 on it.  A big Thank You to Steve for doing a great job coordinating  everything.
 
Kip reminded everyone that Southwest Kiwanis Club's Golf Outing is July 18th. It would be nice if we had a team participate in their outing, since they had 2 teams at ours. Kip will work on lining up a team.
 
Vince is working on speakers for July. He is planning to reach out to Eddie in case he has a speaker lined up.
 
Frank thanked everyone that went to the service for Ila Dean, for the cards aKiwanis Club of West Omaha Meetingnd plant.
 
Remember you can bring food, clothing, household items to our meetings and Joann and Deb will deliver them to one of the following: Open Door Mission, Stephens Center, Sienna Francis House.
 
Rod introduced our speaker Tiffany H Reagan, Executive Director Omaha Parks Foundation. The Omaha Parks Foundation supports, protects, preserves, promotes, and improves the Omaha Parks and Recreation System. Tiffany told us about the complete and current projects they were involved with. Although they work closely with the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department on many project, they are a private-fiduciary partner to multiple government and non-profit institutions. Tiffany gave a very enlightening speech.
 
Board Meeting is Thursday, June 13th at 6:30 pm at Kip's office.
 
Speaker for June 17th is David Edmund Black, Senior director Public Affairs at Union Pacific Railroad.
 
Next Meeting is Monday, June 17th at noon at Legends.

Joann and Glen plan to attend the Division Council Meeting on Wednesday at 7 am.  At First Watch.  All are welcome to attend.
 
Joann plans to attend the District Convention in Des Moines on August 2nd & 3rd.  Contact Kip if you would like to attend it.
 
Steve said we have 9 teams for our golf outing. We had 16 last year. We will still make a profit. He will make a recommendation to the Board to continue with it next year. Registration is at 8:30 and Tee Off is 9:00. Registration and raffle volunteers are to be there before 8:00.
 
Glen reminded everyone to email him your service hours for May.
 
Deb brought in clothing and food items for the homeless shelters. She also brought in a table that Bill will deliver to Moving Veterans Forward. Barb brought in food items.  Remember you can bring gently used items and food items to any meeting . Joann and Deb will deliver the items to the shelters.
 
Dennis said we are up to 168 flags to place and pickup. The next date is Flag Day on Friday, June 14th. . He could use 1 more volunteer for pickup.  Meet at Loveland School. Placing flags at 7 am and pickup is at 6 pm.
 
Joann asked everyone to give some thought to a viable project for us to support.
 
Barb received an email from Completely Kid's thanking us for supplying backpacks and school supplies last year. They are reaching out for our support again this year. They asked to have the backpacks delivered by August 1st.
 
We budgeted $1200.00 for backpacks for this year. Barb will use half for Completely Kid's and half for Sacred Heart School. 
 
Vince is not sure who has speakers for July. Notify VInce if you are planning on arranging speakers for July.
 
Rod told us about Shades of Blue - USAF Jazz Ensemble Hosted By Davies Amphitheater. Event starts on Saturday, 8 June 2024 and happening at 104 Lake Drive, 51534, Glenwood, IA.
 
Rod introduced our speaker. Sara Atkins-Rauwald. She is the Marketing Director for The Big Garden in Omaha. Their Mission is to Teach, Build, Grow. Teaching people, Building Communities, and Growing Food Sovereignty.Their goal is to reduce hunger by increasing access to fresh, healthy produce and teaching people to grow, cook, & preserve their own.  It was amazing to hear how many lives they touch through The Big Garden.  You can learn more by going to their website  https://biggarden.org/
 
Our speaker June 10th is Tiffany H. Regan: Executive Director for Omaha Parks Foundation.
